Explore ESG Information
Chugai conducts its business activities to fulfill its mission of benefiting the medical community and human health around the world.
In the capital markets in recent years, interest has grown in non-financial information such as environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors as an essential viewpoint for evaluating a company’s long-term sustainable growth potential.
If we view Chugai’s activities in the context of ESG, the “social” aspect is our business activities, “environmental” encompasses activities that support the achievement of our mission, and the continuous improvement of “governance,” which includes aspects such as human resource management, enables medium- to long-term value creation. For Chugai, which is engaged in business related to the important social issue of health, ESG is inextricably linked with the long-term fulfillment of its mission.
Environmental
1Environment
As a healthcare company, Chugai is engaged in many scientific and specialized activities, and has a considerable role to play in protecting the environment, which we regard as an important foundation underpinning all of our business activities. Accordingly, we have set priority items and mid- to long-term targets, not only to promote the sustainable growth of our business, but also to protect the environment of the communities where we operate, and the planet as a whole. We are working toward these targets as a company-wide endeavor.

Climate Change Countermeasures
Climate change countermeasures are increasingly coming into focus as an important issue worldwide. With an expected strengthening of fluorocarbon regulations, efforts which are simply an extension of previous initiatives have their limits, making an even higher level of initiatives essential. Chugai will implement long-term and large-scale climate change measures to achieve its long-term goal of zero CO2 emissions with 2050 as the final year.
Also, Chugai conducted scenario analysis based on the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) recommendations. Through the analysis, we will work to address climate change risks and opportunities and engage in further improvement of disclosure.

Use of Renewable/Recycled Resources
With the emphasis on a circular economy, we not only need to fulfill certain obligations, but work to make more dynamic, effective use of resources. Efforts aimed at zero emissions of waste are essential, but at the same time we are designing Chugai’s own business activities to be compatible with a circular economy. In addition, while our business activities are conducted primarily in Japan and thus are characterized by relatively low water risks, given the increased demand from outside, we will be engaging in rigorous risk assessment and management.

Protection of Biodiversity
Work is needed to not only strengthen handling of PRTR target substances and management of specially controlled industrial waste, but to address the list of substances of very high concern (SVHCs) under the REACH regulation. Chugai will strengthen efforts in wastewater management and in reducing chemical substances, including validation of product manufacturing plans, while also enhancing our efforts to work with local communities.
