Global Environment
- Climate change and energy countermeasures
- Contribution to circularity and water management
- Protection of biodiversity
Basic Approach
We aim to be a global role model that leads the way in solving environmental issues.
The Chugai Group regards global environmental preservation
as an important foundation that underpins all of its
business activities.
Based on this idea and taking into account international
agreements on environmental issues, we have established
mid-term environmental goals for 2030.
To achieve these ambitious goals, we will work with Roche
and external partners to promote innovative global
environmental conservation activities.
Additionally, we will be conscious of complying with
international disclosure standards and work to proactively
disclose evidence-based information.
Through these efforts, we aim to become a global role model
that leads the way in resolving environmental issues.
Furthermore, based on the recognition that environmental conservation and safety and health are closely related, we have established an environment, health, and safety policy and created a management system that integrates EHS (environment, safety, and health). Under this system, we are promoting company-wide initiatives that protect the safety and health of our employees while also taking environmental conservation into consideration.
Initiatives
Activity Goals - Mid-term Environmental Goals 2030
Under the EHS management system, Chugai has established mid- to long-term environmental targets for three key areas it has identified as material issues in protecting the global environment: climate change countermeasures, use of recyclable resources, and protection of biodiversity.
Global environmental initiatives
Initiatives to address the three key issues
-
Climate Change Countermeasures
We will create and promote new environmental measures in collaboration with business partners and academia to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and achieve more efficient energy use, with challenging goals based on international agreements.
-
Use of Renewable/Recycled Resources
In addition to targets for overall waste reduction, we have also set goals for reduction of plastic waste and water consumption, which are major sources of marine pollution, and will work to achieve a circular economy through promotion of environmentally friendly business activities and joint development of recycling technologies.
-
Protection of Biodiversity
In addition to our efforts to conserve and restore natural capital, as an R&D-oriented pharmaceutical company, we set our own reduction targets for hazardous chemical substances and work to minimize chemical substance risks throughout the product life cycle in order to pass on our irreplaceable earth to future generations.
Environmental performance data
Introducing specific initiatives
We have identified three material issues?climate change countermeasures, use of recyclable materials, and protection of biodiversity?and are working to address each of these issues using cutting-edge and effective methods.
Education and Training
Conduct EHS risk assessments from the perspective of the environment, health, and safety and develop and implement measures. We strive to raise awareness of the significance of EHS risk assessment and to maintain and improve our assessment techniques.
Activity Reports
Disclosures based on the TCFD recommendations
Based on the framework of the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), which was established at the request of the leaders of each country at the G20 in 2015, Chugai is working to strengthen governance regarding climate change countermeasures, analyze risks and opportunities, and conduct scenario analysis based on their financial impact, etc. We are also working to respond to climate change risks and opportunities and further enhance information disclosure in order to strengthen the foundation for sustainable growth.
Environmental Investment
We are currently calculating the amount of environmental investment required for facility upgrades and other measures to achieve our mid-term environmental targets for 2030.
People and Activities
