Goals and Initiatives
The Chugai Group has set environmental goals and health and productivity management goals to continuously promote environmental protection activities and health and safety activities from a medium-to-long-term perspective.
Mid-Term Environmental Goals
In 2014, the Chugai Group set the following four mid-term environmental goals, with 2020 as the final year, to promote environmental protection activities from a medium-to-long-term perspective.
- Energy consumption per employee: 20 percent reduction compared with 2010
- Discontinuance of the use of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs)
- Zero emissions of waste (A waste recycling ratio of 99 percent or more): Three facilities
- Average fuel efficiency of MR fleet: 16 km/L or higher
Environmental Action Plans
As we work toward achieving our mid-term environmental goals, we have implemented an ongoing program of environmental and safety activities that involve setting yearly action goals or plans for each item based on the mid-term plan, evaluating the results, and reflecting those results in the following year’s plan.

Health and Safety Goals
As we advance health and safety activities in line with our basic approach, we have established six priority items in the area of health and productivity management: countermeasures for employees against cancer; lifestyle-related diseases, mental health, and improvement of employee presenteeism (working while sick)*1; health literacy and workplace safety measures. We have set mid- to long-term goals for each of the following items, and are conducting activities to achieve them.
- Cancer prevention and treatment support: Increase cancer screening participation rates (Lung, stomach, colon, breast, and cervical cancer) to 90% or higher.
- Lifestyle disease prevention: Reduce the rate of high-risk individuals to 2% in 2020.
- Health literacy: 90% or higher awareness of Company programs
- Workplace safety: EHS risk assessments conducted at each site at least once every three years
- *1 Employee is present but is unable to perform adequately due to a physical or mental health problem.
Goals to and Initiatives to Achieve Non-smoking within the Chugai Group
Chugai has strengthened smoking restrictions as a means of addressing cancer and lifestyle-related diseases, two of the priority items in our health and productivity management program, to eliminate the adverse health effects of smoking, including passive smoking. The entire Company is working toward the goal of a “zero percent” smoking rate among all employees.
Goals (in Japan)
- End of September 2020: Smoking prohibited in all workplaces
- End of 2021: Smoking prohibited during work hours

Reduce greenhouse gas*2 emissions by reducing energy consumption as a company-wide initiative including not only on reducing energy consumption at plants and laboratories, but also on deploying eco-friendly vehicles in the MR fleet and others. |
Resource Conservation/ Waste Management |
Achieve zero emissions of waste by improving recycling ratio and further reducing landfill waste. Monitor water withdrawal and wastewater emissions, and enlighten staff in effective use of water resources. |
Biodiversity Protection Prevent Environmental Pollution |
Suppress destruction of the ozone layer by eliminating use of specific CFCs and HCFCs. Suppress emissions of pollutants into the environment by complying with laws and regulations of air, water and soil conservation. To protect the water environment, in addition to conducting whole effluent toxicity (WET) tests, participate in activities to protect the water source environments of rivers used by plants and research laboratories. |
Improve Environmental Literacy | Inform relevant staff about laws and regulations and raise awareness through ISO14001 internal auditor training. |
Chemical Substance Management | Promote the establishment of a proper management system of chemical substances to ensure safety and prevent environmental pollution. Continue risk assessments to control exposure to substances handled. |
