Goals and Initiatives

The Chugai Group has set environmental goals and health and productivity management goals to continuously promote environmental protection activities and health and safety activities from a medium-to-long-term perspective.

Mid-Term Environmental Goals 2030

The Chugai Group will contribute to the realization of a sustainable global environment by setting mid-term environmental goals for the three issues identified as material: climate change countermeasures, use of renewable/recycled resources, and protection of biodiversity, with the final year set for 2030. Furthermore, since climate change is the most critical global theme and requires long-term, large-scale countermeasures, we have also established long-term goals for some items, with 2050 as the final year.

  • *3 Substances of Very High Concern

Mid-Term Environmental Goals 2020

The Mid-term Environmental Goals, with a final year of 2020, were formulated in 2014 with energy conservation, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), and waste recycling ratio. The four items in the chart below were established as mid-term environmental goals, with an emphasis on energy consumption and waste management. At the same time, each year annual goals relating to these mid-term environmental goals were set and steady progress was made to advance each initiative.

While energy consumption per employee was reduced by only 17% compared to 2010, CO2 emissions per employee were reduced by 20%. Note that energy consumption per employee is expected to be reduced by 20% in terms of non-renewable energy consumption through the use of Green Electricity Certificates.

Mid-term Environmental Goals (Target year: 2020)

Item Goals 2020 Results
Per-employee energy consumption 20% reduction vs. 2010 17% reduction*4 vs. 2010 (20% reduction in per-employee CO2 emissions vs. 2010)
  • *4 To be reduced by 20% in terms of non-renewable energy consumption through the use of Green Electricity Certificates.
MR fleet average fuel consumption 16km/L or higher 27km/L
Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) Discontinuance of use Achieved
Zero emissions of waste
(Waste recycling ratio 99% or higher)
Three facilities Two facilities

Environmental Action Plans

As we work toward achieving our mid-term environmental goals, we have implemented an ongoing program of environmental and safety activities that involve setting yearly action goals or plans for each item based on the mid-term plan, evaluating the results, and reflecting those results in the following year’s plan.

Health and Productivity Management Goals

As we advance health and safety activities in line with our basic approach, we have established six priority items in the area of health and productivity management: countermeasures for employees against cancer; lifestyle-related diseases, mental health, and improvement of employee presenteeism (working while sick)*5; health literacy and workplace safety measures. We have set mid- to long-term goals for each of the following items, and are conducting activities to achieve them. In September 2019, as part of promoting health and productivity management, we issued the “Chugai Group Non-Smoking Declaration” with the intent of further strengthening measures against smoking, which plays a deep role in cancer and lifestyle-related diseases. The aim is to reduce the smoking rate among employees to zero (as of the end of 2030), and with the entire Group working toward that goal, in September 2020 we reached our goal of prohibiting smoking on all of our premises. Working with relevant divisions, we also provided care for individuals whose stress check results indicated a high level of stress. At the same time, we are working to improve organizational health based on the results of organizational analyses. Naturally, in addition to these preventative steps, we also continue to offer cancer treatment support and return-to-work support programs, and conduct mental health-related awareness activities. Further, we plan to establish new mid-term health and productivity management goals in 2021.

Mid-term Health and Productivity Management Goals

Item Goals 2020 Results
Cancer screening participation rates*6,7 90% or higher Stomach cancer 83%, colon cancer 85%, lung cancer 95%, breast cancer 86%, cervical cancer 64%
Rate of lifestyle disease high-risk individuals 2% or lower by 2020 4.7%*7,8
Awareness of Company programs 90% or higher 63%
EHS risk assessments Conduct at least once every three years at each facility Eight out of 16 facilities
  • *6 Cancer screening participation rates among those of target age for lung, stomach, colon, breast and cervical cancer.
  • *7 Data for screenings between April 2019 and March 2020
  • *8 Criteria for high-risk individuals are being reconsidered to offer a more proactive response

Health and Productivity Management Initiatives by Theme

Theme Description of Initiatives
Countermeasures against Cancer Aim for early detection of cancer by strengthening recommendations for cancer screening, and provide enhanced support for continuing to work while undergoing cancer treatment.
Countermeasures against Lifestyle-related Diseases Encourage high-risk individuals to take appropriate treatment and strengthen health guidance for them to reduce leaves of absence, job departures and accidents caused by lifestyle-related diseases.
Countermeasures against Mental Health Conduct return-to-work programs and countermeasures to improve working environments based on the results of stress checks in cooperation with relevant departments.
Countermeasures against Smoking Strengthen smoking countermeasures as part of countermeasures against cancer and lifestyle-related diseases, and to eliminate the adverse health effects of smoking, including passive smoking.
Health Management and Improvement of Health Literacy Continue to maintain an employee support system based on cooperation with the health management organization and related departments. Improve health literacy as the basis for all health and safety activities, and conduct training for all employees.
Workplace Safety Measures Create work environments that are free from unacceptable EHS risks.
