Top Management Commitment

Representative Director, President & CEO Dr.Osamu Okuda

Realizing a healthy and fulfilling life for people is a universal aspiration shared around the world.
Chugai, founded by Juzo Ueno, who had an aspiration to address the severe medicine shortages following the Great Kanto Earthquake, has consistently been committed to its mission of benefiting the medical community and human health around the world, always operating with patient value and social sustainability at its core.

Our basic management policy is “Creating shared value for Chugai and society”. We aim to lead the resolution of social issues by placing sustainability at the center of our business activities, share the value created through these activities with our diverse stakeholders, and develop together with society. We will create shared value by providing “advanced and sustainable patient-centric healthcare” through innovations that only Chugai can create.

Chugai has outlined its vision of becoming a top innovator in the healthcare industry by 2030 and has been working since 2021 on its growth strategy, “TOP I 2030,” to bring this vision to life. Through collaboration with Roche, we are challenging ourselves to create revolutionary new drugs through innovation in order to become a top innovator in the global healthcare industry.

In recent years, there has been a growing crisis regarding the sustainability of social systems, such as environmental issues and widening economic disparity. Furthermore, unpredictable and drastic changes, such as the rapid advancement of digital technologies including AI and the accompanying shifts in customer needs, are having a significant impact on society. To solve social issues and achieve sustainable growth in the current environment, Chugai must sincerely address these social issues from a long-term perspective and further evolve our efforts in business activities.

Under TOP I 2030, we will implement reforms to realize our vision of a top innovator. One of the key focus areas in the reform of our growth foundation is the environment, and so we have established the Mid-term Environmental Goals 2030. We will actively and proactively promote measures for climate change and energy, resource recycling, and appropriate water management, as well as biodiversity conservation. We will also strengthen our efforts in respect for human rights, compliance, stakeholder engagement, corporate governance, and health management, all of which are areas with high expectations and demand from society.

We also recognize that the driving force behind innovation for “creating shared value for Chugai and society” is our people, human capital. Accordingly, “Human capital and organization” is also one of the key areas to be focused. Based on the sophisticated human capital management from the mid and long-term perspective, we will continue to promote the strategic actions such as assigning the right personnel to the right position, improving the employee engagement, developing the diverse talented human capital to drive innovation, fostering the corporate culture which encourages the bold challenges and promote diversity, equity and inclusion (DE&I).

We believe that these efforts will also contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations.
Today's social issues are becoming more and more complex and sophisticated, and achieving the lofty goal of realizing a sustainable society requires solving these issues through partnerships and co-creation with diverse players. Through partnerships with a wide range of players, not limited to pharmaceutical companies, we will accelerate the creation of innovation and respond to society's expectations and demands.

Through these activities, we will work on solving social issues centered around healthcare, aiming for a sustainable society. By acting with integrity and a progressive approach, we will create shared value between Chugai and society. By 2030, we aspire to become a global role model, leading the resolution of social challenges.
