Contribution to Global Environmental Protection - Efforts to protect water resources through forest maintenance at our production site 2023 -

Social Contribution Local Communities Environment

As part of its goal of contribution to global environmental protection as stated in “the Chugai Pharmaceutical Group Code of Conduct (CCC)”, the Chugai Group is actively promoting efforts to minimize our impact on the global environment.  Water is an important resource indispensable to a sustainable society and business activities, and is an important raw material for drug manufacturing. The Chugai Pharmaceutical Group aims to contribute to the construction of a sound water circulation system by using limited water resources with care and by returning water to the source in a clean state.

As part of that effort, since 2019, we have continuously implemented water source conservation activities through forest maintenance in Kawanehoncho, Haibara-gun, Shizuoka-ken, the source of water used at our Fujieda Plant, and since 2022, in Yokoze-machi, Chichibu-gun, Saitama-ken, which serves as a water source for our Ukima Plant.

In April 2023, we concluded the “Saitama Prefecture Forest Creation Agreement”1) with Saitama Prefecture (Motohiro Ono, Governor, Saitama Prefecture) and the Saitama Agriculture & Forestry Corporation (Michio Kowase, Chairman). Under this agreement, on October 9, 2023, employees and their families of the Chugai Pharmaceutical Group thinned trees2) under the direction of Saitama Prefecture and the Saitama Agriculture & Forestry Corporation. In addition to the tree thinning which we conducted, tree planting, pruning and clearing of underbrush will make it possible to protect healthy forests that also serve a watershed conservation function3).

In addition, with the cooperation of the “Eco Future Fund” and under the guidance of the “Kawane-life”, employees of Fujieda Plant and their families engaged in shrub4) removal and maintenance work in Kawanehoncho, Shizuoka Prefecture on September 2, 2023, and made building blocks using thinned wood as a woodworking experience, in addition to the tree thinning, on November 18.

In addition to reducing the amount of water used in its production activities and managing wastewater, we would like our water source conservation activities through forest maintenance at production sites to not only minimize the impact of our company’s production activities on the global environment, but also to contribute to the conservation of abundant water resources used jointly with the people living in the watershed area. These activities will also lead to meeting SDGs that target safe water, and sea and land conservation.

In our business activities, the Chugai Pharmaceutical Group uses water with care and releases it back into nature in a clean state, and by continuing with efforts to maintain the forests that nurture clean water, we will contribute to building a society in symbiosis with nature.

1) An agreement concluded between companies and organizations that conduct forest creation activities, municipalities that provide activity locations, and Saitama Prefecture so that they work together to create forests in order to protect and nurture forests, which are assets shared by the people of Saitama Prefecture.

2) Tree thinning: Work designed to prevent forests from becoming overgrown, leading them back to health by cutting down certain trees to maintain appropriate density. Thinning allows sunlight to reach the individual trees, while also encouraging the growth of shrubs, leading to a healthier forest.

3) Watershed conservation function: As trees put down solid roots in the earth, this ensures that rather than immediately flowing away, rainwater soaks deep into the earth (soil) where it becomes a source of slow-flowing groundwater.  This prevents soil runoff, alleviates flooding and drought, and ensures a supply of clear, clean water for all of us.

4) Shrub: Short trees with undeveloped trunks
