Collaborating with Patients in Drug Development

Patients Are Members of the Drug Development Team

Chugai Pharmaceutical views patients as members of the drug development team.

Patients are the only individuals with real-life experience of living with their illness, and this perspective is essential to drug development.

Chugai Pharmaceutical collaborates with patients, medical institutions, and the MHLW to develop drugs and medical devices that truly satisfy patient needs.

Drug Development in Collaboration with Patients

Chugai Pharmaceutical promotes initiatives that incorporate the perspectives and voices of patients into drug development. This includes efforts to disseminate information about ongoing clinical trials, convey Chugai Pharmaceutical’s commitment to each participant, and reduce the burden on patients participating in trials.
Past clinical trials are introduced as examples. Chugai will continue to work with medical institutions to expand these clinical trial efforts and explore new ways to collaborate with patients.

[1] Clinical Trial Protocol Development

During the investigational plan phase, Chugai gathers input from patients based on their daily experiences with the disease, including their concerns about participating in clinical trials. These insights are reflected in the protocol before finalization.

Drafts of the Informed Consent Form are reviewed by multiple patients with the relevant condition. Patient feedback on unclear expressions or sections needing more detailed explanation is incorporated in the Informed Consent Form before finalization.

[1] Providing Flexible Care Options

Chugai supports home-based care options such as telemedicine, home nursing visits, and direct delivery of investigational drugs. In consultation with medical institution staff, patients may choose to complete checkups or tests in locations that minimize their burden.

[2] Use of Local Medical Institutions

Traditionally, patients had to visit designated clinical trial sites. Chugai now allows some tests to be conducted at nearby medical institutions to make participation more accessible.
