Chugai Supports Statement of Japan Climate Initiative and Recommendations of the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures
TOKYO, February 4, 2020 -- Chugai Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. (TOKYO: 4519) announced its support for the statement by the Japan Climate Initiative (JCI) urging strengthened measures to address climate change, and the recommendations by the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD).
“Strengthening sustainable platforms” is one of the five strategies Chugai has set in our mid-term business plan IBI 21. Chugai is increasing its efforts to achieve the Group’s mission and to tackle key issues (materiality), which were identified based on potential impacts that its business activities may have on the economy, society, and the environment. Global environmental issues are one of Chugai’s main focuses. The increasing impact of climate change on business activities, in terms of both risk and opportunity, have raised public awareness that companies need to address this problem with a sense of urgency.
The JCI (URL: https://japanclimate.org/english/) is a flexible network of companies, local governments, NGOs that proactively aim to realize a decarbonized society through the implementation of measures addressing climate change. Chugai joined JCI as a founding member when it was established in 2018. The JCI statement entitled “Calling on the Japanese government to enhance its NDC” urges the Japanese government to upgrade the NDC (nationally determined contributions) target of Japan based on Paris Agreement including the greenhouse gas emissions reduction target. As a member of JCI, Chugai will continue striving to help protect the global environment with other members.
The TCFD (URL: https://www.fsb-tcfd.org/) is a private-sector-led organizational task force which focuses on climate-related financial disclosures. It was established in 2015 by the Financial Stability Board at the request of the G20 world leaders. Based on this, Chugai has decided to support the recommendations made by the TCFD, and will address the risks and opportunities presented by climate change through enhanced information disclosure to further reinforce its foundation for sustainable growth. This will be done by enhancing climate change governance, conducting scenario analyses of risks and opportunities, and analyzing financial impacts, in accordance with the TCFD framework.
