Project to Promote International Industry-Government-Academia Collaboration in Medical Care for Rheumatic Diseases

Activity report in 2020

Sustainable Patient-Centric Healthcare Global Health Social Contribution Healthcare

"The Medical Program for International Promotion of Japan’s Healthcare Technologies and Services for Rheumatic Diseases"* is a project promoted by the Department of Internal Medicine (Rheumatology) at Keio University Hospital and adopted by the National Center for Global Health and Medicine. By supporting this project and playing a role in industry-government-academia collaboration, Chugai aims to contribute to the realization of sustainable treatment for rheumatic diseases and improved quality in Indonesia.
Please see here for past activities.

Due to the impact of COVID-19, we provided the following support via the Internet.

1. Remote factory tour(Utsunomiya factory
A remote factory tour was conducted so that Indonesian medical professionals could see the manufacturing process and safety measures for biologics. On-site tours were held in 2018 and 2019, but due to difficulties associated with the pandemic, the tour this time was held via ZOOM. It was well received by the more than 60 Indonesian medical professionals who participated, as they gained a realistic feeling of being inside the factory through ZOOM and the detailed explanations by factory staff.

2. Remote lecture
A remote lecture was held on the theme of "Improving communications between doctors and patients." Dr. Hiroaki Harai, a psychiatrist, gave a lecture on the skills of "motivational interviewing" to motivate patients and support their achievement of treatment. The lecture was an opportunity for Indonesian medical professionals to consider how to deal with patients and learn practical skills.

In 2021, we will continue “actions for sustainable development” with the aim of improving the quality of medical care for rheumatic diseases in Asia, and will promote our continued support so that we can play a role in industry-government-academia collaboration.

Comment by Dr. Katsuya Suzuki, Department of Internal Medicine (Rheumatology), Keio University
"Through our activities so far, the Indonesian Rheumatoid Association (IRA) has proactively created two types of guidelines (rheumatoid arthritis and spondyloarthritis) and provided detailed educational lectures for doctors who work on the front lines of medical care. I feel confident about the progress toward building a self-sustaining system in Indonesia. Fortunately, as we had been carrying out local activities for a long time, the online activities went smoothly in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. In particular, the remote factory tour, which was a first, was very popular with many medical professionals. As regards improving communication skills with patients, a gap remains between the ideal and reality, but I think it is an important theme that will be needed in the future.
In 2021, the target area will expand to 16 locations. We hope to make even a small contribution through activities such as lectures for patients, and efforts to disseminate guidelines on standard treatments so that patients themselves can say they feel the change."

* This is a project in which the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare supports the international expansion of medical institutions and companies with the aim of "international contribution in the medical field" through the National Center for Global Health and Medicine. Keio University applied for the first time in 2018 and the project was adopted as the "The Medical Program for International Promotion of Japan’s Healthcare Technologies and Services for Rheumatic Disease".
