Appointment of
Chugai’s Deputy Chairman Motoo Ueno as
President of Business Ethics Research Center (BERC)

TOKYO, June 29, 2017 -- Chugai Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. (TOKYO: 4519) announced today that its Deputy Chairman Motoo Ueno has been appointed as President of the Business Ethics Research Center (BERC) as of today.

BERC is the first industry-university cooperative institution specialized in practical studies of business ethics in Japan. Chugai joined BERC in 2003, and in 2006 received the “Business Ethics Effort Prize (Symbiotic Special Prize),” which honors business ethics and CSR activities of the member companies of BERC. In June 2014, Chugai was elected as a directing company of BERC, and has been proactively involved in BERC’s research and support activities.

Chugai believes that three elements of integrated corporate values define corporate growth: “Economic Performance,” “Social Awareness” and “Human Development.” Rooted in its belief that corporate ethics take priority over profit, Chugai established the Chugai Business Conduct Guidelines (Chugai BCG) as standards to pursue social responsibility through fair corporate activities. Additionally, Chugai organizes the CSR Committee and the Compliance Committee at the management level, operates the BCG Hotline, and implements periodic awareness training to all employees to ensure a consistent level of corporate ethics throughout the Chugai Group. Every employee is responsible for addressing and implementing the guidelines described in the Chugai BCG.

Through his appointment as President, Chugai will continue working towards its goal of being a “company that satisfies all its stakeholders and receives their active support and trust,” and to contribute to the realization of ethical management throughout the industry.
