Chugai Group Provides Support to Children Orphaned in the Great East Japan Earthquake as Part of Roche Children's Walk

Employees of Chugai Group have raised approximately 2.35 million Japanese yen through the company's participation in Roche 2011 Children's Walk*1, a global charity event sponsored by Roche to assist children in need. Chugai Pharmaceutical matched the amount raised to bring the total to 4.70 million yen. The company will donate 4.30 million yen to Ashinaga*2 for the construction of Tohoku Rainbow House, a facility for supporting children orphaned by the Great East Japan Earthquake, and approximately 400,000 yen to assist children orphaned by AIDS in the African country of Malawi*3.

It is the sincere hope of Chugai Group that the areas affected by the earthquake recover soon. The company is considering ways in which it can assist further.

Support already provided by Chugai Group for those affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake:

  • A donation of 100 million yen from Chugai Pharmaceutical given through the Japanese Red Cross Society.
  • A donation of approximately 25.90 million yen collected from directors and employees of the Chugai Group and given through the Japanese Red Cross Society.
  • The provision gratis of the anti-influenza drug Tamiflu® as a stockpile for about 60,000 persons.

*1 Roche Children's Walk
Roche Children's Walk is a global charity event sponsored by the Roche Group to support orphans in the African country of Malawi and others. The event coincides with the International Day of the African Child (16 June).

*2 Ashinaga
Ashinaga is a Japanese non-profit organization that provides support in the form of scholarships and ongoing psychological care to orphans in and outside Japan. Ashinaga built Kobe Rainbow House in 1999 as a location to provide psychological care for orphans of the Great Hanshin Earthquake.

*3 Malawi
A country of over 15 million people located in southeast Africa. The country is severely ravaged by AIDS. About 14% of the adult population has HIV, and almost 500,000 children have been orphaned by AIDS.
